Issue 28: Spring 2010 (Part 3)

3rd March - Youth Night
Featuring Sarah & Kathryn Tindall,
Jossie Evans & Daniel Gascoigne

(A wealth of young talent. Please support our young musicians)
Sarah and Kathryn are the two very talented daughters of Paula and Stuart Tindall who collectively, as a family band, have hit the headlines at some of the country's top folk festivals including Warwick and Banbury. Sarah plays bass guitar, keyboards & treble recorder, Kathryn plays flute, recorder, keyboards & rhythm guitar. They both have stunning voices with superb harmonies.
Jossie is another superb guitarist and singer, who has performed at club youth nights in 2007/09 and at the John Dickie Memorial concerts, featuring youth, at the Banbury Canalside Folk Festival in the past few years. Her latest claim to fame was as a support to Fairport Convention at the Party in the Park Concert in Adderbury Church last year. Jossie is now writing her own material.
Derek and Mary first spotted Dan in a music session at Bedworth Folk Festival and enjoyed his rendering of Dylan numbers. Dan has been playing guitar for about 4 years and uses a finger picking style on his acoustic Fender. He has played at open mic nights in the Coventry area and is starting to write his own material.
All of these are very talented young performers. One can only describe them as absolutely stunning and a great pleasure to see and hear. Come along and support them - they're the future of our music!

17th March - St Patricks Celebration with "Fola"
A prize for the best Irish Costume!
Fola is/are Andy & Kate, who are based in the marvellous Black Country to the west of Birmingham. Playing mainly original songs, mixed with some Irish traditional tunes and the odd folk song, Fola's strength is in their engaging live performance - as we found out when they appeared at Open Stage nights and when they guested at the club last, back in December 2008. They have recently recorded a set of tracks partly at Pure Studios with Andy Seward (double bass and engineer to Kate Rusby and Eddi Reader) and partly at their own studio, An Seomra Glas...the good news is that the CD is now available from them at gigs. If you do not feel brave enough to wear Irish costume an Irish Joke or two will help get us in the right mood for the occasion!

'The most remarkable musician I've ever seen' - Anthony Simpson, BBC. Will Pound is son of Bill Pound who formed Steamchicken with Ted Crum and Andrew Sharpe in 1992. His folk background started when he was quite young when he was asked to joined Chinewrde Morris Dancers as the drummer at the age of 10. His first gig with them was at the Spa Centre in Leamington Spa at the 25th Peeping Tom Anniversary Ceilidh. Will has been playing the harmonica (his main instrument) since he was a small boy with vague memories of a certain Mr Crum giving him his first harmonica. Bill Pound can be blamed for the boogie-woogie and blues style Will has developed on Piano and Keyboards and less said about drums the better. Many people consider Will to be the best young harmonica player in the UK.

7th April - Club closed for Easter
14th April - Club's 11th Birthday Celebration with Bob Fox
Supported by "Linda Watkins & Mike Moyse"
In 1975, after spending 5 years as a floor singer around the many folk clubs in the North East of England as well as being a resident singer at the famous “Davylamp” Folk Club in Washington, Bob Fox met up with fellow North Easterner Tom McConville and his career as a professional folk singer/musician began. In the duo with Tom he toured the vibrant folk club scene of mid 70’s Britain playing a mixture of Irish & Scottish dance music and singing mainly traditional songs primarily from their native North East, Tom on fiddle and Bob on guitar and piano. Bob was vaunted as one of the best new singers on the scene and when the duo with Tom dissolved after 2 very successful years Bob formed a highly acclaimed partnership with ex-Hedgehog Pie man Stu Luckley. Bob Fox & Stu Luckley amazed the folk clubs, festivals, reviewers and music press alike with their unique and innovative approach to arranging folk songs old and new, their first album “Nowt So Good’ll Pass” was voted Folk Album Of The Year by Melody Maker on release in 1978 and remains a classic album. Bob & Stu were in great demand and played almost every folk club and festival in the UK and were support artists on major British tours for both Richard & Linda Thompson and Ralph Mctell. The duo also toured Germany, Holland, Australia and New Zealand and released a second album “Wish We NeverHad Parted” in 1982 before breaking up to pursue individual projects. Since that time Bob has worked on developing his solo career and has also created a songs and slide show “How Are You Off For Coals” with Benny Graham depicting and celebrating the rich and varied culture of the coal mining communities of Durham & Northumberland which they performed at our Festival. In the year 2000 Bob celebrated 25 years of singing folk songs professionally and was invited to appear as “special guest” on the Fairport Convention “Wood and the Wire” UK tour in February. His first ever solo CD “Dreams Never Leave You” was subsequently recorded at Dave Pegg’s Woodworm Studio with various members of Fairport playing on it. One of Britain’s most respected and internationally acclaimed performers Ralph McTell said of Bob Fox: “As soon as I heard Bob Fox sing I realised that he must have one of the best voices in England. I have always regarded him as an artiste of great integrity and ability". A regular favourite at the club and at the Festival, we are pleased to have Bob back to help us celebrate the club birthday!

Linda Watkins grew up in the heart of South Wales amidst a musical family with Irish connections! She therefore has a very healthy interest in Celtic traditions and songs and has been singing in both English and Welsh since the age of three! First and foremost she is a singer-songwriter with a passion for melody and with a guitar style that ranges from delicate folk accompaniment through to strident and percussive contemporary pieces, Linda’s style carries through to her use of other instruments including bodhran and mandolin. Currently Linda performs alongside bass player Mike Moyse who himself has a history of musical achievements. From his very early days playing bass for successful northern sixties band The Yarebeats he has emerged a very accomplished musician now deftly donning a 6string guitar, writing his own material and providing excellent harmonies with his gentle, folky voice. Neither is a stranger to Banbury Folk Club so we know we’re in for a musical treat tonight!
